How do you know when the artifact was made???

There were different eras in ancient Egypt and different tings happened in those times, like the 10 plagues,  the time of the Hebrew slaves and Moses. So when these different things happened there were different tings that people drew and did. E.g.: when the Egyptians went through the 10 plagues they drew  pictures of blood , death and killing. This is how you can tell that this was the time of the 10 plagues.

You can also tell by the way that pottery was made. In the early ancient Egyptian times they invent lots of great things but as people grew old , more people came up with better ideas, so they wouldn’t break or hold more. The newer generations also invented new and better things to use.

Ancient Egyptian Pottery

Ancient Egyptian Pottery.

The ancient Egyptians enjoyed to have pottery around them. They loved to make them during the day what they needed something to do. The loved to carve special meanings and pictures as decorations on the pottery vases and other decorations.

Some of the object the ancient Egyptians used to make in that time were:

  • plates
  • tombs
  • dishes
  • food containers
  • drink containers
  • containers to hold wine
  • used for scrap bits of paper

The ancient Egyptians found 2 different objects that were used as clay to make pottery. They are called: Nile clay and Marl clay. To make the clay stick and turn out well , they had to stomp their feet on it. They also had to get all of the lumps out of it so they could start to mould the clay.

Why was it important?

Pottery was important in this era because it gave them an opportunity to discover many more uses for this material.

 

Ancient Egypt’s Makeup

The Egyptians always loved to look nice in front of people and they used a lot of make up to do that. Some of the makeup that they used was called Mesdemet, which was a a dark gray dust. It was found around Aswan and on the Red Sea Coast. It was also among the materials  brought back by Pharaoh Hatshepsut’s famed expedition to Punt and was given in  tribute by Asiatic nomads.

How do you put on the traditional Egyptian makeup called: Kohl Eye-Makeup

  • Dampen the stick.
  • Twist it in the kohl. Give it a little shake or a  tiny flick of the wrist so that the excess drops off.
  • Place the kohl stick in the inner corner of your eye.
  • Close your eyes
  • Gently draw the stick outwards, between your closed lids: the kohl will  leave a smudgy line on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Why was it important?

Make up was important to the females in ancient Egypt times because it made them feel beautiful.

Egyptian Limestone Cat Statue

This limestone  is among 600 cat statues from a temple dedicated to the Egyptian cat goddess Bastet. The ancient temple was recently discovered under the streets of  Alexandria, Egypt.

Egyptian archaeologists who found the temple say it was built by Queen Berenike II, who ruled Egypt from 246 to 221 B.C.

Cats were important house pets in ancient Egypt and were often there in private tombs. In some cases, cats were mummified in the same way as humans and buried at temples because the ancient Egyptians had a large amount of respect for cats.

These cats were worshiped and the Egyptians made catstatues out of clay and stone to show their respect for them.  

Why was it important?

These statues were important in that era because it reminded the Egyptians of the cats and the respect they had for them.

 

Senet Playing Piece

Playing piece

Today, in the modern days we like to play board games like monopoly or connect four. Well, Egyptians also liked to amuse themselves during the day by playing a board game called ‘Senet’. This is a playing piece from the game. It’s about 3cm high, and it is white.

The Egyptians used sticks to play this game, instead of dice. it was a game that only needed two people. You need to throw the sticks and how many sticks are facing up is how many spaces you move up.

One of the main rules were if you got a 1, 4 or 6 you could get another turn. Also the first person that finishes the whole board wins the game.

Why was it important?

This game was important because it gave them something to do and to have fun with, with someone.

Make-up Pot

Make up pot

The ancient Egyptians loved to dress up and use jewelry and a lot of makeup. The Egyptians invented a makeup holder to hold every piece of makeup the needed.

Both men and   women used special powders and pastes to cover their skin to make themselves look better. The make-up was not only worn to make them look attractive but also to protect them from the  hot climate. When the Egyptians used their make up that helped them in the sun, it is similar to sunscreen.

This pot may have stored ‘Khol’ this is  black makeup that the Egyptians used to decorate their eyes in the ancient times.

Why was it important?

This was important to the Egyptians in this era because they had something to have that would hold all of their makeup. It was important to them because they didn’t want to loose anything.

Necklace

The ancient Egyptians loved to wear jewelry, like necklaces, rings and charms. On of their favorites were wearing necklaces. They wear them with charms on them, they liked wearing blur beads because it represents loyalty and being royal. The necklaces were normally made out of pottery beads called ‘faience’. these charms were made out of clay and/ or bones from the dead.

The more richer people that lived in the ancient times in Egypt used gold and silver to make their necklaces.

Some other jewelry that the ancient Egyptians like to wear were: Wesekh Collar, Menat Collar and Shebyu Collar.

Why was it important?

Necklaces were important in this era because the Egyptians has something to make out of something special like gold or silver. They loved to dress up and the necklaces were an important thing to wear.

Amulet

Amulet

An amulet could also be called a lucky charm. They were often made to represent one of the many different gods that the Egyptians believed in. This amulet  represents ‘Horus’ who was one of the most powerful gods that they believed in. He had a man’s body and a hawk’s head. A lot of amulets have been found in Egyptian tombs as they were wrapped up with body in order to protect it from evil when they were dead.

When the Egyptians used the amulets, they used them for jewelry like bracelets, necklaces, rings and charms.

They believed in the time that when you have this amulet with you or on you, it can help you can keep the bad spirits away.

Why was it important?

The amulet was important in that era because the Egyptians believed that if you were wearing it or holding it, it would give you luck and keep all of the bad spirits away form them. It was very common to have this amulet.

Mirror

The ancient Egyptians were always wanting to know how they looked. So they invented something that was like a mirror. It wasn’t made out of the same things that we have today, but what they made was just what they needed.

The mirror that the ancient Egyptians used in that time is made out of a metal which is called bronze which is a mixture of copper and tin. The scientific name for a mixture of metals is Alloy. The mirror  was made by beating a lump of bronze until it was as thin as a sheet of cardboard.

Then it was polished to make it shiny enough to reflect the light back from  your face. Sometimes these mirrors had handles made out of bone (from the dead) or ivory.

The Egyptians also decorated the handles of the mirrors. I they did it meant they cared about what they looked like and that it will keep the evil spirits away.

Why was it important?

The mirrors in this era were important because the Egyptians always wanted to know what they looked like, so the mirror that they invented was a great way to do so. They could put on their makeup and check what they look like during the day and at night. Looks were very important in this era so a mirror is what they needed.
